The "Hip Bump" Sweep is one of the best sweeps to master. It happens to be one of the first sweeps a beginnner learns in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (alongside the Scissors Sweep).
In this article, we will discuss what makes this move work, when to go for this move, other attacks to combo with this move, and how to defend against this move.

CONDITIONS FOR THE HIP BUMP TO WORK
The "Hip Bump Sweep" is executed from the bottom of the closed guard position. The conditions for this move to be successful are as follows:
1. You have closed guard on your opponent.
2. Your opponent is postured up in your guard, sitting their butt on their ankles.
3. Your opponent is not controlling your arms or chest
If you do not have the above conditions, the technique will probably not work. You need to start from closed guard, so that your hips are close enough to their hips. Your opponent needs to sit up in your guard, because this technique will tip them over onto their back. If your opponent controls your arms or chest, you will not be able to sit up with enough momentum to tip them over, and they will sense and defend your attack better.

EXECUTING THE HIP BUMP SWEEP
The sequence of movements (done quickly together) is

1. Uncross your ankles and plant your feet flat on the floor, with your knees pointing straight up.

2. Slap one arm to the mat beside you, to post up.

3. Explode your hips "thru" your opponent (into his ribs, above his hips), attempting to place your knees on the mat behind him.

COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID:

Attempting the move without opening your guard - You cannot generate enough momentum if you do not fully commit to the move. Do not worry that your opponent will pass your guard when you open your guard.

Not planting your feet flat on the mat with knees pointing up when you open your guard - You need a solid base to launch your hips, so don't mess this part up.

Not "exploding thru" your opponent" - You need to imagine your hips slicing thru your opponents torso straight into the ground, and explode with the same amount of force. If you only bump lightly the move is very weak. It is important to really explode, because you set up the other attacks (Guillotine Choke, Kimura, etc) really well when your opponent is threatened strongly by this sweep.

COMBO ATTACKS WITH THE HIP BUMP
These attacks work well with a failed Hip Bump Sweep, just as your opponent puts their weight into you to counter the sweep:
Guillotine Choke
Kimura Armlock
Omoplata Shoulder Lock
Neck Crank Turnover

These moves are set up best if you really commit to a Hip Bump Sweep, because your opponent will be most off-balanced resisting. A weak Hip Bump Sweep attempt does not really do any good to set up these attacks.

DEFENDING AND COUNTERING THE HIP BUMP The best defense starts with proper posture. If your posture is correct, your opponent cannot execute this sweep. Sitting up in your opponents guard without controlling your opponents arms or chest is incomplete posture, because your opponent can sit up easily without resistance. Also, when your hands are in contact with your opponents torso you will learn to sense their movements faster than you can see them move with your eyes.

If your opponent starts the hip bump sweep against you, counter their weight with your own by leaning your body weight into your arms, and press them back into the mat. This counter does not require that much strength, since you are using gravity and your body weight to halt your opponents momentum.

In closing, the Hip Bump Sweep is a great sweep to use against any opponent, and when the sweep fails it can be a great setup for other attacks as well.
